Geosciences and Map Library

The Geosciences Library is located in the B-Level of Fine Hall, directly across Washington Road from Guyot Hall, where it will be a part of the science library complex currently being constructed.  The Geosciences libary houses one of the finest geoscience collections in the United States. The collection consists of over 76,000 monographs and bound periodicals, 1,200 journal and document subscriptions, 3,000 departmental theses, 25,000 microfiche and 900 CD-ROMs.  Subject coverage is broad and deep, and in addition to a strong geology collection includes marine biology, geomicrobiology, environmental geosciences, oceanography and atmospheric sciences in support of the department's teaching and research initiatives.

The library is also a regional depository for U.S. Geological Survey, National Imagery and Mapping Agency, National Ocean Service, and U.N. publications.  Special services include access to over 250 specialized databases including GEOREF, Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, Web of Science (Science Citation Index), Dissertation Abstracts, Engineering Index, RLIN, OCLC, and GEOMAP.  The library is able to supply from its collection 85% to 90% of citations found in a typical GEOREF search and to supplement this has an active Interlibrary Loan program with other universities, a rapid Document Delivery service via UnCover funded by the Library and a speedy Ariel document delivery service with other Princeton branch libraries and Firestone.

The Map Collection has 300,000 maps, charts, aerial and satellite photographs and related materials.  It is the University's primary Map Collection and therefore all subject areas are collected.  In addition, the collection strongly reflects the department's teaching and research interests in the geosciences, oceanography, topography, bathymetry, and physical geography.  Photocopying facilities include an 18" x 24" copier for maps and charts.

Princeton University Library's GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Center located in the Map Collection opened in Fall 1998.  A cluster of 4 computers with GIS software and data will be available for use by the Princeton University community.  An experienced full-time GIS professional librarian/consultant is available to provide a broad range of services including in-house or in-classroom training.

More information on the Geosciences Library, Map Collection and GIS Center can be found on the library's home page.
