EDUCATION

2004–present    PhD candidate, Joint Program, Princeton University and University of Tasmania

·     Investigate the physiological mechanism of nitrogen isotope fractionation during nitrate metabolism by marine phytoplankton as a means to understanding modern marine processes and paleoclimate changes

·     Advisors: Prof Danny Sigman (Princeton) and Assoc Prof Tom Trull (University of Tasmania)

June-July 2003  International Geobiology Course, University of Southern California, Catalina Island, USA

·     Attended a 6-week course offered annually to 20 international participants, involving lectures, lab work, and independent research in the field of geobiology. Conducted an independent research project investigating new pathways in the marine sedimentary nitrogen cycle involving manganese, culminating in an abstract and presentation.

2002-2004         MSc, Antarctic  & Southern Ocean Studies, University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia

·     Thesis: Relationship of nitrogen isotope fractionation to phytoplankton size and iron availability during the SOIREE Southern Ocean Iron RElease Experiment

·     Advisors: Assoc Prof Tom Trull, Dr Leanne Armand

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Investigating ways to connect global and regional views of the nitrogen cycle to biological processes occurring at the cellular scale. Understanding the role of the Southern Ocean in past, current, and future climate change.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

2000-2002          Fulbright Fellow, Antarctic Cooperative Research Centre, University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia

·     Analysed the nitrogen isotopic signature of nutrient utilization in Southern Ocean surface waters under iron-rich and iron-poor conditions to improve interpretation of the region’s role in glacial/interglacial climate change

·     Advisors: Assoc Prof Tom Trull, Dr Leanne Armand

August 1999      Researcher, Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden

·     Examined Arctic Ocean sediment cores for evidence of ice grounding

·     Advisor: Dr Eve Arnold

1997                  Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego, USA

·     Evaluated the potential use of marine barite accumulation as a paleoproxy for oceanic biological productivity in the Southern Ocean

·     Advisors: Prof Miriam Kastner, Dr Adina Paytan
