Research Description of my project: I am working on a putative Cd-alkaline phosphatase in Emiliana huxleyi. The objectives of my study are: (1) to explore the biochemical function of Cd in coccolithophores; (2) to determine the distribution, diversity, and evolution of Cd-AP in the ocean; (3) to study the biogeochemical cycling of Cd and P on a global scale and its effect on global carbon cycle. This research will provide a critical link between the biogeochemistry of trace metals and macronutrients, and has implications for the global carbon cycle. Thesis Title: Novel Metalloenzymes in Marine Phytoplankton: A Link between Trace Elements and Macronutrients in the Oceans
